It's time to have the talk... about Technology and Safety!

As a new quarter starts I am going to be working with grades K-8 talking about different topics concerning being safe online, being a good digital citizen and knowing how to search for reliable or appropriate sources.

In Kindergarten- 2nd Grade the focus is on four main rules:

1.) Ask your parents (or an adult first)

2.) Only talk to people you know

3.) Stick to places that are right for you

4.) Don't share your personal information

In 3rd- 8th the focus is on respecting people's creative rights (don't plagiarize), cyberbullying, making sure you know about online security (passwords, information sharing), and finding good and reliable sources. In 6th-8th there is also a focus on your digital life, how apps leave a digital footprint and can effect your life long term.

I have fact sheets and information for parents to use when they have the talk with their students at home (thanks to of Common Sense Media ) on my website. Common Sense Media is a great resource for parents, it offers book and movie reviews and lots of great internet and online safety tips.
